Farewell, People's President!

Eminent jurist Fali S. Nariman pays glowing tributes to Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the president of India from July 25, 2002, to July 25, 2007, in an article in The Indian Express.

I have always known that Dr. Kalam's personal integrity is beyond reproach, but this has been quite a revelation.

He has, arguably, been the best president India has had since Dr. S. Radhakrishnan.

I do wish that he had been elected for a second term in office.

His presidency has indeed been a blessing for the country!

I read an interesting article about the lady, the other day, and shall post it on the blog, if I manage to locate it online.

Good people do not belong in India’s (or any country’s) dirty politics. A general statement. I do not know why Dr. Kalam did not want to continue for a second term, but this statement may apply to his reasoning.

You are right in the sense that the politicians decided not to support him for a second term mainly because of his honesty and integrity.

I seriously want Mrs. Patil to grow beyond all the prejudice we have about her…Dr. Kalam was The Best, anyway!

Amen! I hope Ms. Patil is able to do that. It might be difficult though, after a lifetime of nepotism, corruption and abuse of power.

It’s not as if she’s the first such president, but only that after Dr. Kalam’s tenure our expectations from our president are now at an entirely different level.

.
to have had such a man as president of a large (pardon the understatement) democracy is a pleasant and highly palatable aberration (no matter how ceremonial the post).

as follow up, perhaps ms patil should have given way to our very own crown jewel of the nuclear (or is that “unclear”) programme, the late (for breakfast), grate [sic] dr qadeer khan, who was sold out by his own people (so much for patriotism vs scoundrel-ism)
.

It is, indeed!

Dr. Khan was made a scapegoat, it seems, to protect those far more powerful than him, which is a sad state of affairs.
