The government of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is prepared to spend crores of rupees to build several statues of elephants (at Rs. 60 lakh per piece) in a 'memorial park', but has allocated an annual budget of only Rs. 50 lakh for the creation and maintenance of a special elephant reserve,
as reported by The Tribune.
A wee bit of political advertising going on there?
ReplyDeleteIt does seem a bit strange to be broadcasting the plight of the elephants, meantime depriving them of the funds needed to actually help them…I’m sure there are other ( more cheaper ) ways of bringing this to the attention of the public..
There are some wonderful..( and some very weird ) statues around Edinburgh and environs, some of which are historical…some artistic…some cultural..others to serve ‘goodness-knows-what-purpose’.
Priorities?…..hmmmmmmm

It’s often the way with people.
Anthropomorphising ideal notions of animals, but not caring too much for the nitty-gritty of looking after them.
Or perhaps it’s just a distraction. If people see plenty of elephant statues around, then they’ll assume that real elephants get plenty of attention for their elephant-y needs.

Actually, in this case, the statues have been built only because the elephant happens to be the ruling party’s election symbol.
